New Mexico’s landlines are being retired

There’s a simple way to keep your home phone

CenturyLink has been shutting down parts of its traditional landline network in New Mexico, one area at a time. Since March 2025, companies like CenturyLink haven’t had to file advance notices with the FCC for these retirements.* Community Phone is a home phone that just works, without phone lines or internet. Plug it in, listen for the dial tone, and start making calls.

Built for New Mexico

New Mexico is unpredictable. Your phone shouldn’t be.

Intentional shutdowns cut off service

New Mexico’s biggest utility cuts power on purpose when wildfire risk is high. It has named nine areas most likely to lose power, Santa Fe and Ruidoso among them.* Community Phone’s backup battery keeps your phone working for 26 hours without power.

Rural New Mexico has fewer options

More than 80,000 New Mexico households have no internet subscription. The state says rural homes are too spread out for providers to reach with a wire.* Community Phone’s industrial-grade antennas provide strong coverage with no internet, even where cell phones struggle to hold a signal.

New Mexico is a target for senior fraud

New Mexicans over 60 reported more than $28 million in fraud losses in 2025.* On average, Community Phone blocks 1,500+ scam calls per month in New Mexico. For customers using the robocall filter, 37% of all incoming calls were caught as spam.

Phone repairs take far too long

New Mexico requires 85% of landline outages to be fixed within 24 hours. But reports after 4 p.m. Friday count as Monday.* With Community Phone there’s no wire to repair or technician to wait for. If you need help, talk to a real person in under a minute. No robots.

New Mexico’s phone rates keep going up

New Mexico lets home phone rates rise on 60 days’ notice. Nobody reviews the increase unless the state steps in or enough customers protest.* There’s no cap on internet-based phone service; rates jump when promos end. Community Phone has a Three-Year Price Lock, no contract or hidden fees.

New Mexico phone fact

In 1905, a man named A.W. Board strung telephone wire along ranchers’ fence posts to connect the town of Hope. The switchboard sat in a local family’s living room. Everyone in that part of the state reached each other through one house.

New Mexicans have always found a way to stay connected to their community. Today, more than 165,000 New Mexico homes still have a home phone.* You can keep yours.

Frequently asked questions about Community Phone in New Mexico

CenturyLink has been retiring parts of its traditional landline network in New Mexico, one local area at a time. There is no single date when service will end statewide, so the timing depends on where you live. When a retirement would permanently end telephone service, CenturyLink must notify affected customers and obtain FCC authorization. Customers may be asked to switch to fiber, wireless, or another available phone service. Community Phone doesn’t use copper wire or internet, so none of this affects your service.

We have customers in 60+ New Mexico cities and towns, across both of the state’s area codes. Just enter your exact address and we’ll make sure there’s strong coverage where you live. The Phone Base uses industrial-grade antennas to pull in the strongest local tower, so calls stay clear even in rural areas where cell service is spotty. We confirm you have strong service before we ship anything. But if you still wind up feeling you’re not getting the coverage you expected, we’ll give you a full refund.

No, Community Phone is not a cell phone. It’s a home phone that sits on your table and plugs into a power outlet. Community Phone’s industrial-grade antennas pull in the strongest local tower, so calls stay clear where cell phones get spotty service.

Community Phone’s Home Plan starts at $45/mo, or $41.25/mo on the annual plan.
We also offer two other plans for your home:

Home Premium adds features such as call forwarding, number blocking and voicemail you can read as texts. It’s $59/mo, or $54.10/mo on the annual plan.

Loved Ones adds features such as voicemail transcriptions and managing an allowed list of trusted numbers. It’s $89/mo, or $81.60/mo on the annual plan.

The annual version of every plan includes one month free. Your rate is covered by our Three-Year Price Lock, and there’s no contract, so you can cancel anytime. Traditional providers lock you into long contracts and nickel-and-dime you with hidden fees. We don’t do either.

Before you pay a thing, we’ll confirm that you have strong coverage at your address. If you don’t, you get your money back.

Yes, you can keep your number and area code if you want to. We have customers in both of New Mexico’s area codes. If you decide to keep your number, we’ll help you transfer it over. We’ll call your phone company for you if we can. If your carrier needs to get the transfer PIN directly from you, keep your last phone bill handy and we’ll walk you through the call.

Easier than you think. All you need is a power outlet and, if you’re keeping your number, a recent phone bill.

  1. We ship you the Phone Base. One dedicated representative handles your switch from start to finish.
  2. Plug it into a power outlet and wait for the dial tone. 30 seconds, no tools, no technician, no internet.
  3. Plug in the phone you already have. If you like your handset, keep it.
  4. Keep your number. We’ll transfer it for you. If your carrier needs a transfer PIN, we’ll walk you through that call.

Chances are, we’re already in your New Mexico neighborhood.

Whether you’re calling family from a chile farm outside Hatch or checking in on your mom from an adobe in Santa Fe, you get the same dial tone. Confirm coverage at your address.
