Kentucky’s landlines are being retired
AT&T is retiring parts of its landline network in at least 82 Kentucky phone service areas. By the end of 2029, it plans to mostly phase out its traditional phone lines across the U.S.* Community Phone is a home phone that just works, without phone lines or internet. Jeffersontown got telephone service in 1904, eight years before it got electricity. Calls went through a single switchboard, where an operator named Jessie Gray connected people by hand. When she left in 1909, the local paper praised the patience and warmth she brought to the job.

There is no single date when service will end statewide, so the timing depends on where you live. When a retirement would permanently end telephone service, AT&T must notify affected customers and obtain FCC authorization. Customers may be asked to switch to fiber, wireless, or another available phone service. Community Phone doesn’t use copper wire or internet, so none of this affects your service.
