On March 12, 1959, Territorial House Speaker Elmer Cravalho received a phone call from Hawaii’s delegate in Congress, John Burns, telling him the statehood bill had passed. The telephone used for the call is still preserved by the Hawaii State Archives.

Hawaiian Telcom has been replacing parts of its traditional landline network across Hawaii with fiber, one local area at a time. It has also filed notice to retire copper facilities on Oahu. There is no single date when service will end statewide, so the timing depends on where you live. When a retirement would permanently end telephone service, Hawaiian Telcom must notify affected customers and obtain FCC authorization. Customers may be asked to switch to fiber, wireless, or another available phone service. Community Phone doesn’t use copper wire or internet, so none of this affects your service.
